| This Diamond Rivière with five festoons is actually part of a set of diamond jewellery Queen Wilhelmina received from her father, King Willem III in 1889. The King purchased the versatile set of diamond jewellery from Jeweller Vita in Amsterdam for 115.000 guilders. Queen Wilhelmina has mainly worn the necklace 1. and two 'Aigrette' frames which in the 1890's became the most popular head ornaments. One of the Aigrettes has a trapezium shape 2. and contains only thirteen large diamonds, one of which is a diamond drop. The second Aigrette, more of an 'aureole' 3. really, contains many smaller stones and has an leaf motif on top. This one was also worn by Queen Wilhelmina in the 1920's over a silk bandeau. The stones from the detachable diamond festoons from the necklace can be remounted on yet another tiara frame for the Diamond Festoon Tiara. The necklace, which contains a large amount of diamonds that weigh over more than 5 carats, is not a very refined piece but has been worn by many Royal ladies regardless. Queen Beatrix has of late started to wear the diamond rivière 4. without the five festoons attached to it as these are now semi permanently attached to a tiara frame. |
