Diamond & Sapphire Brooch

The origin of this diamond and sapphire brooch is uncertain. The large Sapphire  might have belonged to Queen Anna Paulowna who had a large collection of Sapphire jewels and most were inherited by her son Prince Hendrik who left them to his brother King Willem III. On this portrait of Queen Anna Paulowna she seems to be wearing a large round brooch with a round Sapphire in the middle, a remarkable resemblance with the brooch Queen Beatrix has worn so many times - especially during the opening of parliament. Her sister, Princess Margriet and daughter in law Princess Maxima have also worn this brooch. There are no pictures of either Queen Juliana or Queen Wilhelmina wearing the brooch with a Sapphire. However the latter has been photographed with a similar brooch that had a square emerald in the centre and a (pearl) pendant.

Recently Princess Maxima has worn the brooch with a pendant: a large oval Sapphire. The Sapphire pendant seems to have been taken from the large devant de corsage from the Sapphire Parure.
