| This diamond and sapphire bow brooch, which is completely different from the bow brooch that is part of Queen Emma's Sapphire Parure, has a large rectangular Sapphire in the center and a large drop pendant. This piece originally belonged to Princess Amalia, born a Duchess of Sachsen Weimar-Eisenach and wife of Prince Hendrik who was the brother of King Willem III. Prince Hendrik inherited several (larges) sapphires from his mother, Queen Anna. Originally they were part of a large parure.* In 1872 Prince Hendrik commissioned a Jeweller in Berlin to create a bow brooch (then in fashion) using two of his mother's sapphires. Princes Amalia died that same year. When Prince Hendrik died without an heir in 1881, the Jewels were not inherited by his second wife Princess Maria of Prussia but by his brother, King Willem III. Queen Wilhelmina in turn inherited the jewels and she frequently wore this large bow brooch with her spectacular diamond and sapphire wedding gift parure. After Queen Wilhelmina, only Queen Beatrix has been seen with this impressive piece. She wore it with Queen Emma's Diamond and Sapphire Tiara during her State Visit to Luxemburg in 1981. Unfortunately, the brooch has not been seen since. |
