Queen Emma's Insect Brooches

Queen Emma had a small collection of insect motif brooches set with diamonds and precious stones. The insect motif came in fashion at the end of the 19th century. Brooches such as these were mostly worn on hats and were sometimes mounted on small springs to create a lively effect. There are two Butterfly brooches set with emeralds, one (1) is said to have been a present of King Willem III to his wife Queen Emma. Then there's a butterfly brooch with cabochon emeralds and rubies) (2) , a Dragonfly with rubies (3) a pair of flies or honey bees(4) with emeralds and sapphires and lastly a diamond and emerald wasp / bee(5). Some of these might have been made by Jeweller Eduard Schürmann & Co. or Mellerio dits Meller.
