| Some sources say that originally there was a pearl tiara that had belonged to Queen Sophie, born princess of Württemberg, who was the first wife of King Willem III. It was supposedly s a wedding present from her father King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and was created in 1839 by Jeweller A.H. Kuhn in Stuttgart. In 1897, along with many others pieces, this tiara was then altered by Jeweller Schürmann in Frankfurt for Queen Wilhelmina, who choose to wear this tiara for her first official portraits as Queen in 1898. Other sources say this tiara was newly created in 1897 (by Jeweller Schürmann & Co.) using diamonds and pearls from the Orange-Nassau collection. The Württemberg or Ornate Pearl tiara can be worn in four settings: either with all the drop pearls on top 1, with only drop pearls on the diamond bows 2, drop pearls between the diamond swirls 3 or without any drop pearls 4. Queen Juliana has only worn this tiara once or twice. Queen Beatrix wore the Württemberg Pearl Tiara in it's full splendour at her 1966 wedding to Claus Von Amsberg and at a State Banquet in Great Britain in the 1980's. Since then she has only worn the tiara with pearls between the diamond swirls or without any drop pearls. |
