| This tiara consisting of a diamond base with garlands topped with large bouton pearls set in diamonds (pearl buttons) is said to have once belonged to Queen Sophie . Queen Sophie did indeed own a so-called diamond leaf tiara. She brought it with her when she married the Prince of Orange (King Willem III) in 1839. It is often mentioned that the base that particular tiara was used to create a new tiara by replacing the leafs with diamond and bouton pearl clusters (flowers), though the current base actually resembles the upper part of an Oak Leaf coronet once worn by Queen Anna Paulowna and Queen Sophie much more. Which ever tiara it originally was it has been altered considerably. From the 1960's a delicate tiara base topped with five ''pearl buttons' - that were once brooches belonging to Queen Sophie (see portrait). Queen Emma was also portrayed around 1881 wearing at least six similar albeit smaller pearl buttons on her dress. Queen Wilhelmina attached several pearl buttons on the bodice of her dresses at the turn of the 19th century to fasten numerous strands of pearls. She also wore five small pearl buttons attached to a ' hair comb' in the 1920's. The present tiara was first seen in 1966 during the pre-wedding festivities for Princess Beatrix marriage to Claus von Amsberg. The next year Princess Margriet choose to wear this tiara as her wedding tiara. Queen Juliana also wore this tiara on a few occasions. Queen Beatrix choose this tiara for her investiture in 1980 and has been wearing it ever since. It does suit her wonderfully well. In 2003 the base of the tiara was used to create a new wedding tiara, this time for Princess Maxima. The base was now topped with five of Queen Emma's diamond stars. |
