| The Peacock Tail Motif Parure was made by Jeweller Eduard Schürmann & Co. in 1897 for Queen Wilhelmina with rubies belonging to Queen Sophie. This Orient inspired Art Nouveau style diamond and ruby parure originally consisted of a Peacock motif tiara 1) a versatile mirrored necklace that can be worn in different settings 2)and a large brooch 3). The pairs of bracelets 4) and earrings 5) were added later. The central Peacock motif in both the tiara and the necklace are detachable and can be worn separately : Princess Irene has worn the central motif from the tiara as an aigrette * and the ruby and diamond cluster as a brooch in the 1960's. Later in the 1970's she attached it to a Bourbon-Parme tiara. Queen Wilhelmina was rarely seen wearing this parure. Queen Juliana has never worn the tiara. She did borrow her mothers parure a few times and was seen wearing the full setting of the necklace during her investiture in 1948. In 1952 she wore another setting of the necklace as a hair ornament in an oriental style during the State Visit to the US. In the 1950's Princess Irene received the parure directly from her grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina. Princess Irene wore the parure often until the 1970's. For many years it was rumored that the tiara and necklace had been sold by Princess Irene. Though the the large brooch had in fact been worn by Queen Beatrix on many occasions. In recent years the diamond and ruby earrings (that were added to the parure) were worn by Princess Margarita, the daughter of Princess Irene. Then in 2009 speculation came to an end when during the second day of the Swedish State Visit to the Netherlands Princess Maxima surprised everyone by wearing the wonderful tiara, for the first time in more than 30 years. |
